Our History
General Mills' evolution into a premiere consumer foods company traces back to 1866 when Cadwallader Washburn built his first flour mill on the banks of the Mississippi River in Minneapolis.
In 1954, General Mills took its first steps in Canada by constructing a packaged foods manufacturing facility in Rexdale, Ontario. Later that year, Cheerios became the first product introduced to the Canadian market place. The mid 1960's brought us Lucky Charms and an exciting assortment of snack products including Bugles. Betty Crocker Supermoist which later became the #1 cake mix in Canada made its debut in 1978. We launched Fruit Roll Ups to the Canadian market place in 1984, while the mid-1990's saw the introduction of Dunkaroos and Frosted Cheerios. In November 2001, General Mills, Inc. acquired the worldwide operations of Pillsbury from Diageo plc resulting in the expansion of our business portfolio to include brands that hold leadership positions across a number of refrigerated, frozen and dry grocery categories.
New products, new categories and innovation within existing categories have long been the growth drivers for General Mills. Category leadership has been achieved by building strong brands and capitalizing on the heritage of some of the most recognizable equities in the marketplace - Betty Crocker, Cheerios, Pillsbury, Hamburger Helper, Old El Paso and Green Giant.
